Botanical medicine is a traditional branch of medicine which deals with production, extraction, and use of medicines that come from plants. Many pharmaceutical (prescription) drugs have a basis in botanical medicine. Drug companies spend billions of dollars every year developing new drugs, and a majority of them are discovered in plant material, rather than made from scratch in laboratories.
Botanical medicine deals with these substances for their drug-like properties in their raw or unprocessed form, often with many other substances in combination. Usually these other compounds, called co-factors, provide what are called "synergistic effects", or effects that enhance the basic function. In many cases, the botanical forms of these drugs are gentler and have fewer side-effects than their highly processed counterparts. For many drugs, there is an equivalent, equally effective botanical medicinal variant.
Doctor Press, during his training, received extensive instruction in the preparation and use of botanical medicines. Because often times, botanical or herbal medicines can interact with prescription drugs, Dr. Press always checks the latest research on cross-reactions before recommending or prescribing botanicals. In many cases, botanical medicines are more effective than prescription drugs, and have additional positive effects not seen otherwise.
