If you experience tingling or pain in your hand, you may assume you are dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome. Seeking care from your doctor will help you know for sure and allow you to begin exploring the treatment options me.
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when undue pressure is exerted on your median nerve. This runs through the carpal tunnel present in your wrist. Your carpal tunnel is made up of eight wrist bones, the median nerve, and nine tendons. Inflammation or swelling in this small tunnel may put pressure on the median nerve and result in tingling and pain that is referred to as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Getting to Know the Early Signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Usually, the symptoms will begin slow. It will start with tingling, numbness, burning, and some pain. You may begin to feel it in your thumb and several fingers, but not usually in the pinkie. This strange sensation may also move up your forearm.
For many people, the symptoms begin at night. This is because many people sleep with their wrist bent. This can cause undue pressure on the median nerve. You will likely wake up feeling like you have to shake your hands out.
As the condition worsens, symptoms may occur during the day, too. This may happen if you are doing something where your wrist is bent up or down for extended periods, such as reading a newspaper, driving a car, or holding your phone.
At first, the symptoms of this condition may come and go. However, as time passes, they will occur more often, and they may become worse.
You may notice other symptoms, too, with some of the most common including:
- Your fingers feel swollen even though they do not look swollen
- Shocks that suddenly appear in your fingers and thumb
- Tingling and pain that travels up through your forearm and into your shoulder
As time passes, carpal tunnel syndrome may also affect your grip and the ability you have to pinch. Some of the issues that may be happening include:
- You are dropping things more often because of weakened muscles or numbness
- You find it difficult to work with smaller objects
- It is harder to make a fist than it used to be
With more severe cases, you may lose muscle at the base of your thumb. You may not be able to tell cold from hot just by touch, either.
Seek Treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
If you are experiencing any of the issues mentioned here, it is a good idea to seek help from your doctor. They can ensure you receive the needed treatment and that your problems are resolved. Do not ignore signs of carpal tunnel syndrome. As time passes, the problems you experience will get worse and cause more pain and other issues. By seeking treatment in a timely manner, you can avoid these issues and feel confident that the issue will not get worse.
